    Abstract

I am grateful to many individuals and institutions for their support while researching and writing this book. Carol Gluck provided inspiration and guidance at all stages of the project. Henry D. Smith II, Madeleine Zelin, Charles Armstrong, Gregory Pflugfelder, and Louise Young gave generously of their time and insight. Moustafa Bayoumi of Brooklyn College was an extremely conscientious dissertation reader and his insights have contributed a great deal to my understanding of the fallout of empire. Barbara Brooks of the City University of New York gave wonderful advice on sources and historical questions. I learned a great deal from my cohort at Columbia University, especially Jonathan Zwicker, Darryl Flaherty, Chris Hill, Leila Wice, Yasu Makimura, Peter Flueckiger, Ari Levine, Ellen McGill, Georgia Mickey, Ananda Martin, Ken Oshima, Jan Poole, Harrison Miller, David Ekbladh, David Lurie, Sarah Kovner, Hide Tanaka, Kerry Ross, Takashi Yoshida, and Laura Neitzel. My final year was enhanced by the company of Christine Kim and Mark Swislocki. Robert Eskildsen did double duty as mentor and friend, and many of the insights and phrasings in this book came from hours-long conversations with him.
