What problem are you solving?

Abstract

One of the keys to approaching research in a systematic fashion is starting with a specific research question. To ask the right type of research question, the problem being addressed must first be well defined. Regardless of the field of study, identifying a problem to be solved through research requires careful consideration of what problems exist, if and how that problem could be addressed with research, and whether solving the problem will be useful for others and lead to real changes in knowledge or applied matter. This chapter will explore the topic of identifying a problem that is relevant, currently lacks an adequate solution, and can be addressed in an effective manner through basic, translational, or clinical research.
