Abstract

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a simple ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus that infects hepatocytes and is an important cause of chronic liver disease in children and adults. Prior to 1992, transfusion of blood products was the leading cause of hepatitis C transmission in the United States. With the ability to screen for HCV in blood products, vertical transmission from mother to child has become the main source of HCV acquisition in the United States pediatric population.
