Abstract

The correct interpretation of extracellular electrical recording from cardiac muscle is critically dependent on the criteria employed to distinguish propagated electrical activity from electrotonic interactions. We have recently developed a technique utilizing microscopically dimensioned extracellular recording electrode arrays for estimating the cardiac transmembrane current that crosses the myocardial membrane during cardiac activation. Combining this with an immediately adjacent fiberoptically coupled transmembrane potential recording array, electrotonic deflections during ventricular fibrillation were examined. Using these arrays in isolated blood perfused dog hearts, all electrotonic deflections were characterized by a transmembrane current that lacked any inwardly directed component.
