Abstract
Politics in Russia and Ukraine continues to show signs of persistent instability and turmoil. While it is certainly true that democratization has proceeded further than any might have dreamed even five years ago, it is by no means clear that democracy will be successfully consolidated in these countries in the near future (cf. Schmitter and Karl 1991). Threats to democratic consolidation abound- they are said to lie in the authoritarian propensities of many Russian and Ukrainian leaders, the intolerance of the mass publics, the explosion of crime and social anomie, and the rise of neofascist political candidates and organizations. The democratic future of this postcommunist world is by no means secure.
