Abstract
The purpose of this review has been to establish a background in carbohydrate biochemistry as it relates to the human neonate. The emphasis has therefore been placed on the developing human, although many concepts are derived from studies in animal models. Further discussions of the physiology of carbohydrate metabolism are included in the chapters that follow.
