Abstract
A review of the Hauser procedure shows that since it was first introduced in 1938, it has remained the most widely used procedure for chronic subluxation of the patella. Yet, the controversy that surrounds transplantation of the distal tubercle remains. A good result depends upon individualized treatment that is directed at the specific abnormality, the extent of articular damage and the patient's functional demands. The importance of technical factors in the surgical procedure is discussed.
