N1 - Funding Information: The main goal of developing electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) is to enhance accurate treatment by allowing convenient acquisition of more portal images (29, 32, 35, 39, 42, 44). Several commercial systems are now available, and initial experience with their clinical use has been reported (1, 5, 9, 13, 17-19, 28, 40, 45). As expected, these systems are all capable of generating Reprint requestst o: John W. Acknowledgements-This work was supported in part by the NC1 multi-institution contract NO1 -CM-97564 to develop soft- many more daily portal images than the conventional port film technique. With increasing clinical acceptance, it has also become clear that effective use of EPIDs must be accompanied by the availability of analysis tools to quantify the treatment variation information recorded on the portal images. Funding Information: The CVIA tool has been developed as part of a multi-institution research contract sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in the US, to develop portable treatment planning software tools (21, 36, 38). The general approach evolves from earlier research efforts conducted at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology to study daily setup variation using a fiber-optic EPID (17, 18, 30, 31). Like other software tools developed in the NCI contract, it is available for distribution to the radiation therapy community by written request.’
