Abstract

During the past decade, multidisciplinary studies have led to an understanding of the relationship between benzodiazepine receptors, GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) receptors, and an associated chloride channel. These studies have also provided new insights into the etiology of disorders ranging from anxiety to hepatic encephalopathy, and led to the development of promising new agents to treat these disorders.
