Abstract

Oxygen metabolism plays a central role in maintaining normal neuronal functions and tissue integrity. The ability to evaluate cerebral blood flow, oxygen extraction fraction, and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen is critical to understanding neurological diseases and brain functions. Several 15O positron emission tomography (PET) imaging methods were developed in the past decades to provide such measurements. Currently, 15O PET is considered the gold standard for in vivo regional oxygenation measurements. In this chapter, we summarize several PET methods and provide examples of their applications in studying normal brain physiology and functions, cerebrovascular diseases, and aging.
