N1 - Funding Information: To advance women's health through research, we must recognize that knowledge in our field depends on both the questions we ask and who asks the questions. Diversity fosters creativity, promotes innovation, unmasks biases, and broadens perspectives. However, female and BIPOC researchers' voices are often absent because of funding disparities. For example, first-time female investigators receive, on average, smaller grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) than first-time male investigators during a formative stage in an investigator's career. Additionally, African American or Black investigators receive NIH funding at a lower rate than White investigators. In part, this is because African American or Black investigators are more likely to conduct community-level and population-level research, which is not reviewed as favorably as fundamental and mechanistic research. However, this disparity is also reflected in funding of grants in the “gray zone”—proposals scored above the payline that are awarded. From 2011 to 2015, between 0.2% and 0.9% of grants from White applicants in the 35th–59th percentile were awarded, whereas 0.0% of grants from African American or Black investigators in these percentile ranges received funding. To advance research in all areas of obstetrics and gynecology, we must address inequities in funding to champion diverse ideas and support investigators of diverse backgrounds.
