Abstract

Questions of stability and change are at the forefront of clinical, personality, and developmental psychology. In the current entry, five different types of stability are defined (mean-level, rank-order, stability of variance, structural stability, and individual differences in stability), with examples regarding how and why researchers would address each form. Following this, mechanisms that promote stability are discussed, with a focus on why individuals become more stable later in life.
