    Abstract

Contemporary research in sleep faces several significant methodologic and definitional challenges. Although research criteria in insomnia and other sleep disorders have been developed, they have yet to be widely accepted. Also, longitudinal studies have not validated these criteria as identifying a discrete subset of pathology with clinical, prognostic, and etiologic correlates.
