Abstract

Objective: This study was designed to compare the tracheal intubation conditions and hemodynamic parameters during rapid sequence induction of anesthesia with different doses of rocuronium combined with remifentanil. Method. Eighty patients scheduled for elective surgery were allocated into four groups. Anesthesia induction was done with tiopentone 6 mg kg-1 followed by rocuronium 0.6 mg kg-1 and 5 mL saline (in 30 seconds) in Group I, with remifentanil 1 μg kg-1 followed by tiopentone 6 mg kg-1 and rocuronium 0.6 mg kg-1 in Group II, with thiopentone 6 mg kg-1 followed by rocuronium 1.2 mg kg-1 and 5 mL saline in Group III, with remifentanil 1 μg kg-1 followed by thiopentone 6 mg kg-1 and rocuronium 1.2 mg kg-1 in Group IV. The hemodynamic parameters and the intubation scores were recorded. Results: Heart rates in group IV were lower than groups I and III at intubation, and the 1st, 3rd and 5th minutes after intubation. Heart rates in group III were higher than group II at the 3rd and 5th minutes after intubation (p<0.05). In groups I and III, heart rates increased at intubation, and the 1st and 3rd minutes after intubation compared to the baseline levels (p<0.05). Total intubation scores were as follows: group 1, 10.5 (9-13); group II, 14 (13-14); group III, 13 (12-14) and group TV, 14 (14-14). The intubation scores for group I were lower than those for the other groups (p<0.01). Conclusion: Rocuronium 0.6 mg kg-1 com bined with remifentanil 1 μg kg-1 provides satisfactory intubation conditions during rapid sequence anesthesia induction.
