Hodge was on the Education Committee, then headed by chairman of Tufts Neurosurgery Dr. William Shucart, and made an ideal fit for a course designed to highlight the importance of basic science to a surgical specialty. The next year, in 1989, Schmidek stepped down and Hodge became sole acting director of the course.",
