N1 - Funding Information: The course was primarily buoyed in these early years by the personal connections possessed by Schmidek to recruit lecturers and the esteem he was held in to attract residents. Financially, the support shifted from strictly registration fees and National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to the AANS early in the course’s history. The more significant changes came when oversight shifted to the AANS Education Committee, shortening lectures from 2 hours to 90 minutes and lobbying harder for program directors to send their residents.25 Giving organized neurosurgery a stake, in addition to easing any concerns programs had over sacrificing 2 weeks’ worth of resident duties, provided stability for the course’s future once Schmidek stepped down from his leadership role. That time came in 1988, when Dr. Charles Hodge, on behalf of the AANS Education Committee, joined Schmidek in Woods Hole. Hodge was on the Education Committee, then headed by chairman of Tufts Neurosurgery Dr. William Shucart, and made an ideal fit for a course designed to highlight the importance of basic science to a surgical specialty. The next year, in 1989, Schmidek stepped down and Hodge became sole acting director of the course.
