Abstract

Individuals with muscular dystrophy face a life-long challenge in maintaining theirfunction and independence. The purpose of this chapter is to review the role that therehabilitation team may play in helping to promote independence, comfort and safetywithin the limits of the disability imposed by muscular dystrophy. For any individual thegoal is for this intervention to help improve quality of life. Rehabilitation services areprovided by a multidisciplinary team. This chapter is written to provide generalguidelines for the rehab intervention and not the details of any specific therapy. Thischapter is designed to address the principles of management rather than disease specificinterventions as regardless of the underlying pathology the principles of the impairmentand intervention may be similar. Disease specific management issues will be noted.
