N1 - Funding Information: To the Ediror Microwave hyperthermia in conjunction with radiation therapy has become increasing11 common in radiation oncology. One aspect of microwave hyperthermia is radiofrequency interference with ionizing radiation equipment. Our report concerns a case of radiofrequency interference with the console electronic circuitry of our recently installed linear accelerator.* We give hyperthermia treatments at our clinic in a superficial x-ray mom located adjacent to the linac room. The door and observation port to this room located are approximately six feet from the console/card rack of the linear accelerator. The problem of radiofrequency interference occurs within the dosimetry integrator circuits whereb) both dosimeter counters (RADS I and RADS 2) on the linear accelerator begin to register when the microwave hyperthermia unit is operating. although there is no output from the accelerator. This spurious count rate is greatest when the linac’s in the 20 MeV electron beam mode (300 rad/MU output). The result is a decrease in the delivered dose for any specified integrator setting. Whether the console card rack was open or closed did not result in any noticeable difference in the effect. We measured microwave leakage levels using an electromagnetic radiation monitor** with an isotropic probe.‘** Measurements were made in the central portion of the superficial x-ray room and in the central portions of the observation port to the x-ra! room Microwave *Varian Associates Clinac@ 20 linear accelerator. **Narda electro magnetic radiation monitor.
