Abstract

The pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) of lanthanum halide (LaCl 3:Ce and LaBr3:Ce) scintillators was investigated. A polyethylene co-vinyl acetate (18% vinyl acetate) dissolved in toluene was used for the analysis. The PSD for LaCl3:Ce was found to be approximately half that of the commonly used scintillator CsI:T1. It was also found that that for LaBr3:Ce, coupled with its high light output and excellent time resolution, was suitable for high-rate charged-particle detectors.
