Abstract

Psychiatric disorders are much more common than expected among patients with substance use disorders. I-18 While this finding may be interesting in and of itself, it also has important treatment and prognostic implications. For exenple psychiatric symptoms nong patients with substance use disorders have been shown to be associated with higher rates of drug relapse following treatment. 14.19 In addition, comorbidity has been shown to complicate treatment ofboth drug and nondrug problems.20.
