Abstract
The equation of state and volume‐dependent band gap are calculated for SiO2 in the fluorite crystal structure. The equation of state is in considerable disagreement with recent shock magnetic compression results. Its form also suggests that if SiO2 is present in the earth's core in uncombined form it can only be so in relatively small amounts. The band‐overlap transition occurs at a density four times that of quartz at zero pressure.
