Abstract
To the Editor: We commend Carter et al.1 for a well designed study indicating reversal of hypogonadism, impotence and decreased libido in men with prolactin-secreting pituitary tumors after bromocriptine pharmacotherapy. We suggest the possible alternative use of naloxone to suppress serum prolactin while simultaneously stimulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis centrally. Opiate narcotics and opioid peptides acutely depress serum luteinizing hormone and elevate serum prolactin in rat and man.2 3 4 5 Conversely, the narcotic antagonists naloxone and naltrexone have opposite effects.6 7 8 This phenomenon has been extensively studied in the male rat and apparently reflects normal suprasellar modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis by endogenous opioid.
