Abstract

In Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry (FTMS), it is desirable to operate at low pressures to get the best performance for exact mass. The reduction of pressure damping exposes the effect of inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields in the cubic ion trap. In the investigation of the mechanisms for these effects, which limit mass measurement accuracies, it is useful to have a physically meaningful measure of the intensity of a peak which is insensitive to the varying phase and non-Lorentzian shapes often found when parameters such as trap voltage and excitation are varied from their optimal settings.
