Abstract

Over 6million children in the United States have asthma. Wheezing illnesses, common in all school age children, are an early sign of asthma in those predisposed. Targeting environmental factors associated with asthma development prenatally or early in life has the best chance of interrupting this progression. High-dose vitamin D and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation during pregnancy have shown promise. Lessening the effect of early life viral respiratory illnesses or altering the microbiome are other targets for intervention. More precise identification of risk factors, endotypes, and phenotypes of asthma will enable more specific and targeted therapies.
