Prescribing Methadone

Abstract

Despite its use in the United States since 1950, physicians may be hesitant to use methadone to treat chronic pain. This article discusses indications for initiating methadone and highlights important aspects of patient evaluation and monitoring when methadone is prescribed. In addition, government restrictions on the use of methadone are explained.
