Abstract

The nuclear receptor PPARα is activated by drugs used to decrease heart disease risk by improving circulating lipids. New findings indicate that PPARα may decrease vascular disease by promoting the activity of a tumor suppressor in smooth muscle cells, a surprising mechanism since PPARα causes tumors in rodents.
