Abstract

A dust sample collected from the ambient atmosphere of a municipal incineration plant over a six-day period was analyzed for PCDD and PCDFs. The concentrations of each PCDD and PCDF congener groups as well as most of individual 2,3,7,8-substituted isomers in the sample were quantified by using HRGC/HRMS. The results show that the ambient atmosphere of a municipal incinerator can be heavily contaminated by PCDD and PCDFs including most of the 2,3,7,8-substituted isomers by means of fly ash and possibly other incineration products. These results indicate that a risk exists of exposing municipal incinerator workers to PCDD and PCDFs.
