Abstract

Computer simulations of plasmas driven by large-amplitude electric fields oscillating near the ion plasma frequency are presented. The large field excites an instability which leads to an efficient heating of the plasma. This is an instantaneous electron-ion two-stream instability due to the slowly oscillating drift between electrons and ions. A simple theory gives the instability properties and the observed plasma heating.
