Abstract

Chlamydomonas cells move in mysterious ways, swimming forward and backward with different ciliary waveforms, and changing direction in response to cues from light, gravity, and chemicals. This chapter reviews the principles of physics and mechanics that govern the motion and motility of Chlamydomonas and discusses how these principles might explain how the ciliary axoneme generates propulsive waveforms, and how Chlamydomonas cilia are coordinated to steer these cells toward their destinations.
