N2 - Lewis acids when refluxed with excess of tribromoacetic acid as solvent form the solid compounds SnCl2(CBr3COO)2, Ti(CBr3COO)4, Zr(CBr3COO)4, ZrO(CBr3COO)2CBr3COOH, Th(CBr3COO)4, U(CBr3COO)4, Si2O(CBr3COO)6, SbCl2(CBr3COO)3, Al(CBr3COO)3, Fe(CBr3COO)3 and FeCl(CBr3COO)2. The structures of these new compounds have been established by their elemental analysis, conductance, infrared, reflectance, NMR and FAB mass spectrometry. In solution the tribromoacetate groups are readily lost. The Lewis acid character of these newly isolated compounds was established by preparing and characterising their complexes with organic bases.
