Abstract

The ground state and excited state absorption and fluorescence properties of the three free base porphyrins with graded degrees of a macrocycle distortion were studied. The static and dynamic optical properties of these compounds change with an increase of the porphyrin macrocycle nonplanarity. It was shown that the free-base porphyrins with saddle-type macrocycle distortions have a permanent dipole moment with a significant projection orthogonal to the nitrogen plane.
