Abstract

Scale is an active way of perceiving the world. People in the past as well as present scale themselves and their worlds. It is embedded in infrastructure in complicated and multidimensional ways. Here, five scalar tangles, or dimensions, of infrastructure are considered, including project scale, participation scale, environmental scale, relational scale, and temporal scale. These scalar dimensions demonstrate how infrastructure is an active material product and ongoing process. The archaeology of infrastructure offers a unique opportunity for observing the diversity of scalar tangles inherent to infrastructure.
