Abstract

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a constellation covering all conditions impacting normal defecation, bowel storage, continence, or cause perineal pain. Childbirth, obesity, radiation, surgery, or trauma involving the pelvis can result in pelvic floor dysfunction. The true incidence is unknown, but it is common in both sexes. Many patients suffer from more than one disorder simultaneously. A multidisciplinary approach is necessary to correctly evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients. A proper investigation and definition of the patient's symptoms is necessary before treatment can be effective and significantly improve quality of life.
