Abstract

Although the clinical signs and symptoms of von Willebrand disease (VWD) are almost indistinguishable between children and adults, there are specific aspects regarding diagnosis and treatment that are almost exclusive to the pediatric population. This chapter will attempt to briefly describe those aspects and explore the distinctive characteristics of pediatric VWD including diagnostic challenges and nomenclature for mild VWD, optimal screening strategies for VWD in infancy, adolescence (teenage boys and girls), and in special populations (Wilms tumor and hypothyroidism) and address evolving treatment and prevention of bleeding.
