Abstract

Near-UV irradiation of (η4-C4H4)Fe(CO)3, at low temperature In alkane containing Et3SiH or In neat Et3SiH yields CO loss to give the IR detectable 16-electron (η4-C4H4)Fe(CO)2 which subsequently reacts thermally with the excess Et3SiH to give (η4-C4H4)Fe(H)(SiEt3)(CO)2. The rate of reaction is strictly first order in (η4-C4H4)Fe-(CO)2 and depends on temperature; the Arrhenius activation energy is 46 ± 4 kJ/mol from rate measurements in the range 100–160 K.
