Abstract

The problem posed here is that of choosing the spring and damper that will result in the minimum maximum force on an impacting mass subject to a limit on the maximum displacement. The solution of this problem is an interesting exercise that utilizes the concept of nondimensional quantities and provides insights into the dynamics of linear systems.
