note = "Funding Information: The Southern Surgical Association has not been alone in this work. While our ad hoc committee was at work over the past year, the American College of Surgeons undertook a broad effort to affiliate activities with many surgical associations. In June 2021, a retreat was organized, and 2 of us from the association participated in the retreat. More than 50 organizations and surgical societies with almost 200 representatives participated in identifying hurdles around healthcare disparities and access for diverse surgeons to gain membership and leadership in our organizations. At that retreat, the American College of Surgeons announced plans to award $300,000 with match awards from parent organizations of those receiving grant funding. More than 20 competitive grants were submitted requesting funding, and I am pleased to report that the DEI committee under the guidance of Mary Klingensmith and Bob Higgins was able to successfully receive one of these awards—with matching funds from the Southern Surgical Association. I think we should all be very proud of this award for the Southern Surgical Association and to Mary and Bob for putting this together. Of note, we were the only regional surgical society to receive such an award. ",
