Abstract

Nosocomial infections (NIs) in the elderly trauma population have a significant impact on morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the incidence and microbiology of NIs in our elderly trauma population. Prospective data were collected during a 2-year period on 380 patients 65 years or older who were admitted for more than 3 days. NIs were acquired by 147 patients (39%), with a total of 297 infections. Respiratory and genitourinary tract infectious were the most common NIs. Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas were the most common organisms isolated. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was found to be an independent predictor for infection.
