The NK receptor specific for HLA-C was modeled by C Broger at the Computational and Structural Chemistry Department, F Hoffman-La Roche, Basel, Switzerland. I thank Antonio Lanzavecchia and Peter Lane (Basel Institute for Immunology) for reviewing the manuscript. The Basel Institute for Immunology was founded and is supported by Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, CH-4002 Basel.

N2 - Human natural killer cell receptors for MHC class I molecules have been recently identified by cDNA cloning. They are structurally distinct from murine natural killer cell receptors and can be either inhibitory or stimulatory. Despite structural differences, murine and human receptors are diverse and specific for distinct class I ligands. Their characterization provides insight into natural killer cell functions.
