Epicardial suction is proposed as a new test method for determining the material properties of ventricular myocardium that allows deformation to be measured in multiple locations on an intact, isolated, arrested heart. The method is validated using a canine heart arrested during diastole, a square suction cup to apply suction to a region of ventricular epicardium, and magnetic resonance imaging for deformation measurement. The radial strain was positive near the endocardium and became negative near the epicardium and the circumferential strain was negative near the endocardium and the midwall, in good agreement with finite element model predictions.
