Abstract
Bowel obstruction and ischemia are common causes of the acute abdomen, with potential for morbidity and mortality if not recognized promptly. Multidetector computed tomography is the current imaging standard for establishing these diagnoses, but emerging techniques including dualenergy computed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography are being utilized with increased frequency. Radiologists must understand the imaging techniques available for evaluating intestinal obstruction and ischemia in order to provide effective and timely care to patients in the emergency and acute inpatient setting.
