Abstract
A method for determining the ground state wave functional of an euclidean field theory via Monte Carlo simulation is described. Equivalently, the dominant eigenfunction of the transfer matrix is determined. As an illustration of the method, it is applied to a four-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory. The U(1) wave functional shows a sharp change in its behavior near the phase transition between the strong coupling phase, which confines electric charge, and the deconfined weak coupling phase.
