Abstract
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has recently been introduced as an alternative to standard open cholecystectomy. In this report we have reviewed our experience with the first 100 LC performed at our institution over an 8 month period. The technique is described with emphasis on meticulous attention to positive identification of the common bile duct. Conversion from LC to open cholecystectomy was necessary in 4% of patients. Operative time was less than 120 minutes in the majority of cases. There were no bile duct injuries. Most patients were discharged on the first postoperative day and were able to return to a normal level of activity within 2 weeks. We conclude that LC, when performed safely, offers significant advantages over open cholecystectomy.
