Abstract

In Latin America, national origins and national histories began with independence. Independence was nation building, or the beginning of the process of nation building, as could be seen one hundred years later in the displays of centennial celebrations of independence. These celebrations recreated the patriotic spirit of the fiestas cívicas (civic celebrations) that occurred throughout the nineteenth century. They brought meanings of independence to the surface of historical memory in hopes of providing ex-colonial communities with the material to form national ones.
