Abstract

In this entry, we review studies of intersectionality and adolescent research, with a particular focus on critical studies that address how categories, such as race, gender, social class, and sexuality, reveal historical and contemporary trends and realities for youth in the United States. We highlight how adolescents' experiences in family, school, and community settings are defined, constrained, and/or expanded based on the interplay between their personal identities and their social positioning. Finally, we offer ways to support positive adolescent development through an intersectional lens to enhance opportunities for youth across the United States.
