Natural killer cell inhibitory receptors block effector responses by recruiting phosphatases that dephosphorylate molecules involved in activation. However, in this issue of Immunity, Peterson and Long show that inhibitory receptors also signal tyrosine phosphorylation, an event usually indicating cellular activation.
