N1 - Funding Information: The DOE in 1987 and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1988 began to allocate funds for genomic research. With a more substantial fiscal appropriation in 1989, the NIH Office of Genome Research became the National Center for Human Genome Research. A joint NIH-DOE subcommittee further defined the program's first 5-year goals, and the IHGP began officially on October 1, 1990 ( Collins, 1999 ). The United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, and China also joined the effort. The first draft sequence of the human genome was reported in 2001 ( Lander et al, 2001 ; Venter et al, 2001 ). Although obtaining the complete human genomic DNA sequence (99%) with 99.99% accuracy (and no gaps) was the primary goal of the project, the program also yielded a series of accomplishments and technologic advances, which are outlined in Table 17-2 . In addition, the project provided scientists with a treasure trove of cloned resources (genomic DNA clones and complementary DNA [cDNA]) that could be used for functional and diagnostic studies.
