Abstract

As a result of recent legislation, today’s retirees are economically securer than those who retired earlier. Social workers, as all employed people, are interested in knowing what level of income they can expect if they retire now. This article reports findings from a study that attempted to estimate the average household income of recently retired social workers and to compare it with that of retired professionals from similar occupations-nurses, teachers, doctors, and lawyers. Retired social workers’ households receive, on the average, the lowest income of all groups studied. Explanations for the level of income are sought in the percen-tage of household income by source; the receipt of income from specified sources; the earnings and work experiences of retired workers; and demographic characteristics of retired workers.
