Abstract

Knowledge about concussions has evolved over the last several thousand years. Early concepts focused on a concussion being a symptom of a head injury, rather than more modern thinking of concussion as its own independent diagnosis with its own set of symptoms. The areas of basic science, neuropsychology, and prevention of concussion through protective gear are explored in historical terms.
