Abstract

While the potential impact of gene therapy is promising and may have a significant impact on the treatment of malignant disease, its development is still in its infancy. This technology provides the means of re-establishing suppressor mechanisms, selectively eliminating the tumor itself or modifying the conditions conducive to tumor growth. However, before this can become accepted therapy, significant problems have to be solved to enhance the delivery of the gene of choice to targeted cells by a highly efficient, specific and non-immunogenic vector.
