Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to comprehensively characterize the digestive system, including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine), liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. The chapter first reviews normal anatomy and physiology, followed by a discussion of the various studies used to assess function or injury of the digestive system. Next, the pathophysiology of the GI and hepatic systems is explained. Finally, the chapter discusses anesthetic considerations for the digestive system in health and disease.
